DOG IS MAN’S BEST FRIEND
While the special relationship between humans and dogs has existed for millennia, the popularization of the phrase “man’s best friend” is often attributed to a Supreme Court case in 1870. Lawyer George Graham Vest used the phrase in his powerful closing argument, declaring, “The one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world—the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous—is his dog”.
Dogs provide numerous benefits to humans, encompassing both physical and mental health. Here’s a breakdown of how they positively impact people:

Physical Health Benefits:
Increased Physical Activity: Dog owners are significantly more likely to meet daily exercise guidelines, as they often walk, run, or hike with their dogs.
Improved Cardiovascular Health: Regular exercise with a dog can lead to improved blood pressure, reduced blood sugar levels, and a lower risk of heart disease. Dog owners have even shown lower blood pressure and heart rate in stressful situations.
Weight Management: Studies show that walking an overweight dog can help both the dog and owner lose weight.
Reduced Stress and Lower Blood Pressure: The act of petting a dog can lower cortisol (stress hormone) levels and release oxytocin (“love hormone”), promoting calmness and relaxation.
Enhanced Immune System: Exposure to pet dander may contribute to a stronger immune system, potentially leading to fewer instances of colds and allergies.

Mental and Emotional Benefits:
Reduced Loneliness and Increased Social Interaction: Dogs provide companionship and unconditional love, which can help alleviate feelings of loneliness and isolation.
Dog owners also tend to interact more with others, such as during walks or at the dog park.
Stress and Anxiety Reduction: The presence of a dog can offer comfort and ease anxiety, helping people feel more relaxed and self-confident.
Improved Mood and Happiness: Spending time with dogs can boost mood and reduce depression. Research indicates that gazing into your dog’s eyes can increase oxytocin levels.
Increased Self-Esteem and Sense of Purpose: Caring for a dog can help individuals feel needed and wanted, increasing their self-esteem and providing a sense of purpose.
Enhanced Mindfulness: Dogs live in the present moment, encouraging humans to be more mindful and appreciate the simple joys of life.
Support During Bereavement: Dogs offer silent support and a consistent routine, which can be comforting during times of grief.
Benefits for Specific Health Conditions: Dogs can be trained to assist individuals with disabilities like blindness or mobility issues. Therapy dogs are used to reduce stress and improve the well-being of patients in hospitals and care facilities. Studies have shown that therapy dogs can even help children with ADHD focus and manage stress. See the video here for how to yoga with your dog.
