What do Daisy Duke and Spider-Man have in common?
Evidently, it's Burlingame resident Anne E. Appleby. Both Jessica Simpson and Tobey Maguire, famous for their impeccable on-screen physiques, are devotees of a new yoga mat designed by Appleby's company, YogaForce.
But the Force was not always with Appleby. After graduating from Crystal Springs Uplands School and receiving a sociology degree from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1983, the Hillsborough native was toiling through a stressful liaison position with Paramount Pictures in Los Angeles when she discovered the soothing effects of yoga.
It was during this time in 1995 that Appleby also discovered something else — there wasn't nearly enough hip, comfortable yoga clothing on the market for yoga buffs such as herself. So Appleby left Paramount to start her own line of yoga-inspired clothing, which has since blossomed into a full-fledged business that included apparel, yoga mats and lessons given by Appleby herself.
"I wanted to be creative," Appleby said. "I loved marketing and thought it would be fun to market my company myself."
Appleby said her passion for fashion and retail runs deep — her father was once vice president and store manager at Macy's in San Francisco's Union Square.
"I grew up in Union Square Macy's," she said. "I had retail in my blood."
Appleby, whose YogaForce clothing line has appeared in dozens of television shows and movies, from "Sex and the City" to "A Cinderella Story," markets the line through Macy's, Bloomingdale's and 150 spas and resorts around the country.
The company's success has been Appleby's own Cinderella story. YogaForce found its footing just as the yoga boom began to take off during the late 1990s, and it has had its fair share of beginner's luck, she said.
